Buying a watch and jewellry

I fancy treating myself, say in the 10K HKD range.  What's the best place/bargaining strategy?

Also, I will probably have to nearly match it with a purchase for SO, any advice about jewellery as well?

Thx, Tuna

For watches, all I can say is 10K doesn't get you much these days ... maybe a Seiko or Tissot but as far as I know there's nothing in that range for any of the real branded watches.
Not sure about jewellry, but I'm sure it doesn't get you far either !
A much better way to use that money would be to take me out for a sauna instead !

I admit it, I'm cheap.

So will you blow me after I give you the jewellry, I mean take you to the sauna?    Now that would be a unique report, twice in NP...

There are so many watch places in HK, are they really all the same.  Most will just scalp tourists, how to avoid that.  And beyond that how much discount from the window price can I expect.

I don't care so much about the brand name, more about how it looks.

They only scalp tourists if you buy fake stuff in Mongkok's women street.

PRicing is all standard if you buy it from authorised dealer / watch shop.
As for jewelry like gold, that you need to ask the women. No freaking idea how this goldsmith shop offer their discount.

If you buy from branded shops, you dont need to do any bargaining, because price is international standard.

Yeah, kinda what I have been doing.  Getting tired of replacing the fake once a year when I stops working.

Good to know there is no discount and the price is the price, makes things simpler.

I always suspect that I'm paying the Gwelio price and that a local could knock another 30% off or something.

What about watch fairs, are they a way to go or do you have to buy like 10?

Watch might be a good idea on the last day of the fair, they might sell some off.

I bought a fake Panerai watch from Lo Wu around 3 years ago. Cost me around 200RMB, it still works and one guy even thought it was real lol

IF you are going for watches and especially getting from authorised dealer shops, e.g. Prince Jewellery & Watch, Emperor,  King Fook, etc., ask for discount. Usuallly they give certain discount, depending on the brand.

Every one assumes my fakes are real.  I get a new one cause I got bored of the last one not cos it's fake and broke.  Laying down 100k HKD on a watch just feels crazy to me.  I just toted up how much I've spent on punting ever and it's less than twice this value.  I had a shit load of fun for that, how much fun is having an expensive watch.  Cheap justification over.

Anyway thanks for the advice guys.

Any ballpark/range for the discounts available?

where are you from?
HK is not really a good place to buy watches anymore due to the influx of mainlanders jacking up the prices.

i can recommend you look at the brands Sinn and Oris. they are in that price range, and are not quartz watches, but rather automatic, mechanical watches.

the Sinn 356 Flieger in particular is a very nice watch

For around 10k you can get a Tissot Seastar (6k), Oris BC3, TT3, Classic and one of the divers for around 8-10k. Victorinox is not really considered a "proper" watch brand since they mostly make luggage and accessories but they make decent mechanical and quartz watches like the DiveMaster (6k up) and the AirBoss (7k up).

There is an authorized dealer for these brands in Wan Chai that gives  around 30% off the sticker price and based on my previous experience they are open to negotiation if you want to ask, depending on what you are buying.   I can't remember the shop name or the street number in my current drunken state, but I can give you the exact address later if you are interested.

Just as Illwill said most places I've been to are willing to talk down on most branded watches.  The only thing is with Rolex you wont get much of a discount as Rolex is like any other stupid big branded name company, they force the authorized dealer to buy the entire line and therefore in order for the reseller to make any money at all they have to slash prices on stuff that doesn't sell and make money on the ones that do.  I would not buy another rolex in my life unless the SO said she wanted one.  Other than that, I'd move to other branded watches.

But as is stated b4, $10k HKD wont get u very far.

Otherwise there is the option of second hand watches. Kens watches on Lockhart roaddoes this with a reptty good selection of watches and they have the advantage of being close to all the mongering bars so once you bought your watch, you can go and show it to the ladies in the bar to see if it makes a difference   (trust me it doesnt and they willmore fancy a big fat wallet and a casio than a big fat watch and no momey!!).
