i recommend the King book. it's unique: as he's famous, he writes about his life, but he's such a skilled wordsmith that it's an autobiography like no other. he's also got a degree of honesty inspired by an incident he documents--it's not the sort of thing u can write about yrself without having faced adversity to an extreme degree and essentially being forced to save yr own life. never read anything like it.

he also has several well-honed analogies, but that one about your story EXISTING, and you having to excavate it, is dynamite. yes, itrolls around my head too. how could it NOT? this is powerful knowledge.

@ feliphile: some jobs require Canto. but i've worked in HK for 13 years, and although there are often times when i wish i could insert a "Canto-chip" in my head and gain 30-60 seconds of fluency, i'm glad i don't understand it. working in an office when ppl are BS'ing away and being able to let it stream past is a plus--my boss, who's fluent, has said to me more than once: "you're lucky you don't understand this!"

but, i work in a job which does not require Cantonese ability. if u are applying for a job which requires REAL fluency, yes, you canlearn Cantonese but it is not an easy task. i can't advise u, but i will say this:

i recently met an ex-HK cop, pleasant Brit who came over in the mid-70s. his first nine months were nothing but Canto-training. however, realize that police NEED Canto-fluency, they need to understand triad-slang plus standard HK-Canto. in that job, you MUST know what ppl around you are saying...think about it.

so it really depends on you, your qualifications, and what job you're looking at. Hong Kong is a reasonable place: if you have value to offer an employer, they will consider you. however, while taxes are low, salary must be appropriate because if you're not aware of HK's rental market and price-structure, you may be in for a shock.

I speak and write chinese but little dialect. I'm 2 years older than you are (i think). How much does it cost to rent a single room in HK? 15-20k a month?

I don't think canto is a must for the jobs im looking at, though it will be useful for sure... im definitely not going to HK as a policeman lol. Mandarin ability is preferred for the jobs...but I'm concerned since canto is the first language there.

when u say "Chinese" u mean Putonghua, right? this is a sought-after skill in HK. if yr Putonghua-fluent, is it from study or did u grow up with it? most HKers who grew up speaking Canto can handle spoken Putonghua, some are highly fluent also. but HK-Canto is the cultural identifier. i can't be precise, but i learned French for 12 years and while it's rusty, i can speak OK, read decently AND read any Romance language (like Spanish or Portu) about halfway. i can't SPEAK it, but i can read it. if u can read traditional (or even simplified) Chinese and speak Putonghua well yr not gonna have much trouble picking up enough Canto fairly quickly.

i'm not gonna ask what line of work yr interested in, but u can PM me anytime if u want to take things offline...i'm no expert but i can try to point u in the right direction.

if u can afford 15-20K you'll find something suitable...i'm assuming yr used to urban Asia and won't freak out cuz u can't park yr Hummer in the driveway. HK is a small place but one-hour commutes twice a day on crowded buses aren't much fun. if u get a job here u will need to consider location. will u be traveling a lot? maybe u want to live nearer the airport? can u work from home? u cd live in one of the rural enclaves like Sai Kung, Shek O, or one of the outlying islands. there are compromises, but u need to work them out.

HK has about five property agents per block. u can search online, but u'll find the big agencies like Centaline...there are places that specialize in renting to gwailos and think guys like me can only live in pricey places in Mid-Levels cuz we can't eat local food and blah blah blah. fortunately, u don't have to live like that. i live like a local: i'm the only gwailo in my building, it's just east of Victoria Park, rented thru a verrrrrrrrry local agent at one of the shopping malls in nearby North Point. having a comfy/quiet flat is a must in HK as the place is crowded and noisy. but much depends on u and yr lifestyle. lots of guys like to socialize in Lan Kwai Fong, go to Wanchai bars and pick up freelancers. great, but that's not my scene.

About asking others to rate as your substitute, I don't particularly like this. While it's in good fun, this only encourages tit-for-tat type behaviour - you scratch my back (help to give K), and I'll scratch yours later. Better to let bros make up their own mind on how they should use their allotment.

That's good and you should not have much problem picking up Cantonese - especially since you read and write it.  The easiest/best way I know for you to pick Cantonese is for you to watch Cantonese TV programs - those with the Chinese sub-titles.  Force yourself to do so, even until you get massive head-aches - and before you know it, the language becomes natural to you.

@ TD: definitely agree with yr thinking. i check the newbie boards and encourage those who post, discourage those who ask incessant questions or post one-liners. the Rating function works for that, and u get at least one A-point from the start. good intel, pix, tales-well-told get the Ks, that's my general feeling.

however, the random removal of pix, which i never anticipated, affects the stories which this week were simply flowing out. regardless, i'm the one who had the MOST fun--i've found pix i forgot about, and by checking the date-stamps, details came flooding back. i didn't keep a journal in BKK as i was living there, usually write on trips...but these stories were affected when i cdn't post the relevant pix. the first time was irritating, the second time made for a fascinating random story-break. but i realized that with limits still without specs, the stories can be damaged as i'm really kind of overseeing the process. i've had this happen before, but never on a mongering forum! anyway, your wisdom and kind words are appreciated--thx again.

@ SEAJ: that Congrats thread is nifty. i'm glad to reach a higher level, but mostly i am glad that i have a forum for tales that frees me from my daily grind (NOTHING like an oppressive job to encourage creativity), and no writer wants to keep their journal closed. honored to share these fotos with fellow gents: keep them in an encrypted folder on a hard drive, peruse them when u feel like it. these ladies respected me and i respected them. they were not of noble birth (neither was i) but they had heart and soul.

onward and upward! and let's hope feliphile asks more questions so we can hopefully provide guidance in his quest for residence ion this crazy piece of rock we all love.

Well, the idea behind this idle chat thread is to provide a place where ANYBODY - especially new members - can go to and congregate at, to shoot the breeze, ask questions AND most importantly, to still be part of the community here even if we've actually got nothing to report.

Yes, Reports ARE the heart and soul of this whole board - for the main purpose (as far as the financial backers are IMHO concerned) is to give value to the actual advertisers of the site - the DB gals!  But just because one does NOT have any particular report to post up (how many of us can punt daily??!!) it doesn't mean that one should not be able to enjoy just chatting away or discussing things with like minded bros.  Reports would hopefully/should eventually be a natural thing to go and do when one does have something to report!

But of course the Mods are always on the look-out for those who would abuse the rather lax atmosphere here - and thus it IS important that we ourselves do our best to self-regulate and make sure that abuses are curbed.

I wouldn't want someone to pinch hit Ks on my behalf. I post because I enjoy sharing my experiences with this august group of bros. The RA level is just a number to me. Now, there are guys to whom the RA thing is probably a competition. That's kind of unfortunate-the board is supposed to be about fun and good times, and that sort of behavior gets in the way of that.

The other thing, you're 100% correct, you don't want the RA level thingie to degenerate into a role playing exercise. I don't need my back to be scratched and I don't want to feel obliged to scratch someone else's.

I've got a rant!  

I've been noticing more and more old threads being brought back up by newbies.  Months old threads!  Is this actually okay?  In the FAQ's section for newbies, twiceAweek had warned against doing this, but I'm not sure if it was specific to the reviews section or if it also covers the chat section.  I haven't PM'd any newbies or given negative points...I've just replied to one of their rehashed threads to give a heads-up.  Do you (more senior members) guys think it would be appropriate to put these newbies in check?

I dont see why this is a bad thing? Is this not why they are there in the 1st place? To read? If people (or mod's) do not like it, why not delete after a period of time? Otherwise newbies will scroll through and comment on them.

I disagree.  Yes, you're right that these threads are here to be read.  But old threads should be considered "archived."    They don't have to be deleted - there will be members who want to read up on old things.  But maybe they should be locked so that new comments can't be added.  Because it really serves no purpose when newbies revive old threads to make 1-line replies that don't contribute anything.  I'm sure they're only commenting so they can add to their forum posts count.

Just like in the reviews section, each thread has its own natural "lifespan."  Let them run their course, and then leave them be.  So while they're meant to be read, they don't need to have new comments.  It's just a rehash on old things, no need to give them a bump.

I brought such a thread to a mod's attention, and was ignored. I tend to agree with you, to revive a thread that is more or less exhausted,, there had better be a pretty good reason. But...the mods may have more insight to this than I.

Actually, if I remember correctly, this matter WAS discussed a few  months or so ago and it was then decided that the older threads was going to be "Closed" by the Mods.

I then noticed that a lot fo these older threads WERE closed off - but then I have NOT seen it happen any more/no more follow up action.

Guess the Mods have other fires to put out besides this, also IMHO, quite irritating matter.
