As usual.....

Am gonna try something here.... and that is to post up MY replies on other posts on questions asked which I think worthwhile to be included here.

This question on cheap Hong Kong hotels and my reply
//////////
IMHO, the cheapest way to get a hotel in Hong Kong I know of is to buy "Vouchers" from a travel agent.  A bulk purchaser of rooms would re-sell their bought rooms thru travel agents, who in turn sells them to their own clients.

You should try to contact a Hong Kong travel agent who does this re-selling, set up an account with him and ask him to send you his listing of hotels as you get closer to the date of your stay - but note - you will need to PRE-PAY for these vouchers

HK Hotels... like most hotels I imagine, set their rates based on 2 things:

(1) How many room nights per year you use.
(2) How many rooms are available at the time you want to stay.

So, as an example that applies to most 4* - 5* hotels in HK, they typically have 3 - 4 room categories, They all have their own "names" for each category but the basics are the same:

eg.
Standard
Deluxe
Executive

Using the standard room as an example and a 4* hotel kind of pricing and a "common" model that is typical of how hotels operate:

(i) As low as $1,000 / night in low season when lots of rooms are available for a high volume user.
(ii) Up to $4,000 / night in high season when hotel is near capacity.

In other words, the exact same room can vary in price from $1,000 - $4,000 per night depending on circumstances.

Using an example of a hotel with 300 rooms, as soon as the number of confirmed bookings exceeds (240 - 250 rooms) 80% the bottom price moves up, for example from $1,000 to $2,000. At 85% it moves up to $3,000 and at 95% it will go up to $4,000.

What this means, is until a hotel hits about 80% capacity they are very hungry and bargains are their to be had. That is where the "cheap" on line prices come from. If you don't have a specific hotel in mind, you can often get fantastic rates on web sites like wotif.com. Sometimes, I find the lowest price I can online copy the link and then fwd it directly to the hotel. I usually find they are happy to match it because when they deal direct with me there is no on line commission for them to pay. I am happy because I'd rather deal with the hotel than some web site for my hotel booking.

If you are a frequent visitor to HK, contact a few hotels directly, tell them you use ??? room nights per year and ask them for a corporate rate. Co-op your colleagues, friends, customers etc to book under the same account name. They still pay their account directly but the room night gets attributed to your account. This will save you significant money negotiating a corporate rate. Right now I have a deal at the Holiday Inn G.M. in TST where I am in a corporate co-op, we use collectively about 800 room nights per year. As a result I pay $1,000 - $1,200 a night for a mid level room and often get upgraded to an executive.

Handled the right way, dealing direct with the hotel will save you money, however you need to talk to a corporate sales manager or above, not a front desk clerk.

Good advise and should lower your rates in a lot of instances - but not necessarily the lowest price availalble.

When I was running the Asia region, head office had their corporate planner division negotiate master deals with hotels and we used the corporate rate for our staff as well as even our customers. We THOUGHT we got the best rates until my secretary started double checking "voucher prices" with the travel agents she used in a personal capacity.

And the fact of the matter is that she got hotel rooms for much cheaper for her own friends/relatives by using these pre-paid vouchers i/o using our corporate rates.

So I suggest you should double check all of TT's methods above as well as the hotel vouchers method - and figure out for yourself which comes out cheaper. Mind you, just to put TT's numbers in perspective - we had about a thousand personnel in Asia alone and well over 10,000 worldwide PLUS our God knows how many customers who regularly asks us to book rooms for them using our corporate rate; and the hotel vouchers still beats such corporate rate hands down as these hotel wholesalers DO have much bigger volume/can negotiate sharper deals.

Just IMHO

Good idea to check all options Joe. I agree.

Just to clarify, I am not talking about contacting the Holiday Inn group and negotiating a corporate rate for staff to get world wide. Those rates usually suck because the individual hotels know you wont even get a quote, you'll just make a booking.

What I am suggesting (since we are talking about hotels in HK) is contact the Holiday Inn Golden Mile (or Hyatt, or Sheraton, or whoever) directly. Talk to that specific hotel's Corporate Sales Manager, tell them you frequent HK and ask that specific person for a corporate rate to stay at THAT hotel. You'll get a much different rate because the Corporate Sales Manager at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile in HK doesn't care how many room nights you stay at a Holiday Inn Group hotel elsewhere... they are about how many room nights you could potentially stay with them in HK.

Anyway, I use 2 methods. The corporate account method and also getting a low price on line and then contacting the hotel and asking them to match it. Keeps the hotel "honest".

FYI, my last stay in HK I paid $1,080 / night using our corporate account. Cheapest price I could get on line was $1,250 and from a HK travel agent I got $1,450. That's an actual recent example.

Question - when you say that you got $1,450 from a travel agent, is it for him to just make a reservation for you or is it the actual sale of a pre-paid voucher that you would use to check in and cover ALL the charges (except of course bar, telephone and other incidentals) for the day?

Also, your $1,080 and $1,250 - was that net net or is it plus plus - the Hotel tax (is it 18%?), service charges/other charges?

BTW - which online service did you use that would quote you in HK$ i/o in the currency of the country where it's domiciled at? Except for Price line, I'm not aware of a local Hong Kong Internet site that is in HK$; would be great to double check my travel agent's prices - for indeed, I haven't really double-checked his prices for a long time.

Thanks
SEAJ

Just a short report on Chang Ping

It's really winding down in Chang Ping.

Gals leaving in droves, mongers knowing this NOT coming, resulting in more gals leaving.... the vicious cycle!

Can you believe the Pozolim NOT fully booked on a Friday night?  Well, they had room to spare.  Taxis - all over the place BUT in the usual upside down economic world that is China, they're going around asking for high negotiated prices instead of turning on the meter! Yup, their rationale is that since there is so little business, they need to charge more for each trip!!  LOL!

BBS's with more mommies than gals, KTV mommies/managers telling us that they're closing off whole sections for the next few days - as they just don't have the clients OR the gals!

All in all NOT a good place to go mongering - But of course I been getting "smacked" past 2 days haven't I??  So perhaps a bit of sour grapes on my part and mind you, some of my friends are out there toughing it out and somehow still "managing" and getting pretty good "dates"  LOL!

Mate, oh, mate, oh, mate. pixelated porno and wads of Kleenex

Aw fuck me sideways, this is just getting too tragicomic. The real tragedy is this WEATHER: my entire azz just froze right off today. Went out to get my laundry and the damn thing just went THUNK, froze right off like, like...an ASSICLE! Shitfire!

So I'm sitting in front of the heater and thought I would tell u guys about the freelancer I threw outta my hotel room once--first and only time I've ever done it. Deserved? U be the judge:

I'd returned to Bangkok from a ten-day saga in Phnom Penh, and the first night back was great as there was NO poussoir involved. I'd been doing 2-5 gals daily and while it was fab, I was also kinda sexed out. So I had a great night's sleep.

But next day was my last before returning to HK, so I decided to find some company. Met my pal Rico and we hit our various haunts, checking out chrome-pole-polishers, street stuff and whatnot. Ended up at the Thermae, where else. I chatted up some reasonable-looking lass--things were right, we strolled outta the place.

Got into my hotel room and everything was all WRONG. Shower, hiding behind towel, demands to turn off the light before removing towel...I'm trying to crack jokes and lighten the mood, no, she's serious. Then it's like, no blowjob, no this, no that...I can't even remember the point at which my switch flipped. But when it did, I just turned the light on and said to her: "You're not the least bit interested in this, so why don't you just GO. Now."

She got up, dressed, and just before she exited, made her grand speech at the door in English: "I hate...European...PEOPLE!" (she'd previously made some comments about "European people" but I can't imagine, given her attitude, that she was trolling for Japanese-only...plus this was before the Thermae became quite so J-provincial among some WGs. She just seemed to want to make it such a hassle that I would, in fact, toss her out--can't quite describe it but I do think she wanted to either make some cash for doing little/nothing or reinforce some agenda by getting thrown out. Well, I obliged.

I jerked off and went to sleep.

And now: a gratuitous tit-shot so SEAJ can have a lovely wank and slip into the Land O' Nod

JtB

I got prices from Cathay Pacific (pre paid, I pay Cathay and they give me a voucher that I present on check in) and also 2 of the biggest agencies in my home country. I got a price from a HK Travel agent as well. I usually wouldn't bother getting so many quotes but I have had a few people "promising" they could get me fantastic deals in emails so I thought I would give them a try. Travelling on my own is no big deal but when I am travelling in a group and we are staying 7+ nights I try and ensure I am getting the best deal.

Dont get me wrong, the deals are good, much better than walk up but not as good as I can get from other means.

All the prices I quoted were plus tax so level playing field... obviously. For many years the tax in HK was +10% service charge and 3% Govt Tax, (13% total). The 3% was removed a couple of years ago so now it's just the 10%. I should add that my corporate rate included daily breakfast and a good chance I would get upgraded.

I use sites like wotif.com LINK, lots available if you google. Most I look at either default to the "local currency" or give you the option to select the currency you want to use.

As mentioned, I don't book through these online sites to book. If their rate is better than my corp rate I take their rate to the hotel and the hotel matches it. This info relates specifically to HK though. I dont use this system in China. I go to China 4 - 6 times a year but not to the same place each time so I don't have the same kind of relationship with China hotels. In China I usually ask the "Partner" I'm going to see if they have a deal with a hotel in their area. I usually find they do and I get a deal I am happy with.

LOL!
Do yourself a favor and DO check with a LOCAL Hong Kong travel agent to give you a list of PRE-PAID vouchers for hotels in Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific vouchers are....Cathay Pacific vouchers!  Not the vouchers that's sold by these travel agents.

LOL, I realise there aren't any naked pics in my post Joe but please read the whole thing. I got a price from travel agents as well. Try and get a better price than $1080 + 10% for a Premier Room inc breakfast at the Holiday Inn...

Cathay Pacific like travel agents buy in bulk. When I am checking with CX I am checking to see how the airfare and accom package stacks up, sometimes it is worth considering because High Season for flights from AUS is the opposite to High Season for HK hotels.

Can I ask a question, how do Reading Access go up?
It seems to be unrelated to karma points and acceptance points.
I read the Geeting Started Thread, but it seemed to imply that Karma points going up implies Reading Access points goes up too.

So for example, as a nookie newbie , you only have RA 10, but when you have 75 credits, you become a musky member which gives you RA 20.  Get up to 250 credits, you will get RA 30 and so on.

Please note that Karma's (K's) also counts as posting credit (same as posting credit) and are given (or taken away from you) by other members to express their approval, opinion or likes/dislikes. This is to encourage you to post good, informative posts and is also a way for others to express their disapproval.  Spamming, trolling, writing useless one liners, obvious questions, useless "Thank you, good post" lines etc WILL attract negative K's.

Edit - PS - BTW - acceptance points does not mean much as 100 A = 1 K and we on this board usually just use it i/o writing one liner replies as it shows up to 40 characters - with more that can be typed out as a PM to the poster by checking the little box at the bottom.
We also many times use it just to screw around with each other - typical example is the -A you see given to me by TD who I BET YOU is drunk as a skunk again after some kind of adventure with his usual domestic helper Sunday afternoon sessions!  So don't get confused/you just don't pay no attention to ole lush there - he's just screwing' around.
