Guest houses, do you actually need to checkout once your done?

Normally I just leave once I am done without going back to reception and telling them that i'm leaving, as some guest houses their reception is at a different floor.
Is this the right way to do? or do you have to tell them?
I've never seen this written anywhere so wanted to ask.
